Winter/Spring 2010 Programs

Why Them?  Why Then?:
The Great Witch Craze
Sunday, March 21st
Charlotte Wells, Department of History, UNI

Everyone's heard of the Salem witch trials in in the late 1600's, but few people know about the three preceding centuries of violent paranoia over "diabolical" witches' supposed efforts to destroy European civilization.  Dr. Charlotte Wells will walk us through the Great Witch Craze, explaining why the fears of evil magic rose to a frenzy in the late Middle Ages and why so many of those accused of witchcraft were women. Was there an organized cult of witches out to overthrow society? Was it all a plot of men against women? How do the witch trials relate to fear of Jews, lepers, gypsies, and other outsiders? And, finally, how do these events resonate in the contemporary world? There's much to think and talk about besides flying on broomsticks....
