Spring 2012 Programs:

Torture:  Ethics and Pragmatism
Sunday, February 26th
Prof. Francis Degnin, Department of Philosophy & World Religions, UNI

Can torture (or "enhanced interrogation") ever be ethically valid?  Is torture pragmatically justifiable?  What agendas actually lie beneath the use of torture, and how does torture fit into the context of human psychology and the evolution of human values?  UNI ethics professor Dr. Francis Degnin explores these questions and asks:  What does the use of torture teach us about ourselves as moral beings?

Naming Evil:
The Devil in Scripture
and Faith
Sunday, March 25th
Kevin Sanders, Mentor, Education For Ministry

Christianity and Judaism are regarded as monotheistic faiths, and yet an Evil Adversary of the One God figures prominently both in people’s understanding of their religion, and in canonical writings.  The Evil One has been called by many names:  Satan, Lucifer, Belial, the Devil, and been envisioned in many different forms at many different times in history.

In this talk, Education for Ministry mentor/instructor Kevin Sanders will present accounts of the Devil’s checkered past with special attention to how the Evil One is depicted in the Hebrew scriptures, intertestamental literature, the Christian New Testament, and the writings of the early Church Fathers.  In his conclusion, Kevin will offer thoughts about how people of faith may regard biblical assertions about the Evil One today.

The Book of Daniel
Sunday, April 22nd
Dr. Judith Jones, Department of Religion, Wartburg College
